North Wales Journeys : Conwy and the smallest house in UK

It would be rather unconventional, if you are in Conwy and not paying a visit to the famous Conwy Castle. We are probably one of those unorthodox people, who chose to behold the iconic 13th century fortress from outside. This World Heritage site is considered by UNESCO as one of the finest examples of 13th century military architecture in Europe. It is a massive and remarkable structure from the outside and we are sure the interior will also fascinate most tourists.

Conwy, however, has another interesting thing to draw tourists' attention. The Quay house, situated in the Conwy Quay, holds the Guiness Book of World records for being the smallest house in Great Britain.

Smallest House in Britain, Quay House, Conwy
A red dressed lady stands in front of the house, collecting £2 entry fee from the visitors (£1 for a child).

This house was built in 16th century and remained in use till 1900. Robert Jones, a 6' 3" fisherman, was the last to stay in this house, who was forced to leave when the house was deemed unfit for human habitation by the council.

The floor area of the house is 10 ft x 5.9 ft The ground floor comprises of the living room and the first floor is accessible by a staircase within the house. You can see the bedroom on the first floor from the staircase, but stepping inside is prohibited. We did not find any restroom or kitchen inside the house.

You need to be inside the house to understand how small it actually is. It is hard to imagine a 6' 3" person like Robert living in that house. The house is still owned by his descendants.

The Quay House is only 5 mins on foot from the Conwy railway station.

You can spot the Conwy Quay from Pont Conwy or the Conwy bridge (along the Conwy Road beside the suspension bridge).

Conwy Quay and City Walls
The Conwy city walls can be seen behind the series of houses on the Conwy Quay. Can you spot the tiny Red house?

It is a good idea to take a walk along the bridge which can be very rewarding with wonderful views of the River Conwy and surrounding landscape and also of the Conwy Castle.

The walk on the bridge can also be productive for birdwatchers. We found some Oyestercatchers and Common Shelduck on the riverside.

For travelers with car

Vicarage Gardens Car Park is the most convenient to park around Conwy Castle. However, in case parking is full, the next best 2 options are Market Place Car Park (beside Conwy railway station) or the Morfa Bach Car Park.
